I became a crime victim as a survivor when my 25-year-old son Tom was murdered in July of 1993.
I became a member of Parents of Murdered Children, Inc. in 1993 after my son's murder, serving as a Chapter Leader and Board of Director's member. I attended Leader Training at POMC's National Headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1998.
I am a past member of the Advisory Board of Directors for two California based victim's organizations - "Justice for Homicide Victim's" and the "Nicole Parker Foundation."
I served as a charter member of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Division crisis response team. I also graduated from the 10 week LAPD's Community Police Academy.
I graduated from a 40 hour crisis response team training course sponsored by "NOVA" (The National Organization of Victim's Assistance) located in Washington, D.C.
I was a volunteer speaker for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office of Victim's Assistance. I have given speeches to wards (inmates) of the California Youth Authority's Norwalk and Ventura, CA facilities about the impact their criminal actions have, not only on their victims, but also on the survivors and the entire community.
As a crime victim survivor, I served as a member of a Juvenile Crime Task Force committee established by former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti.
I was appointed by California Congressman Brad Sherman as Chairman of a Youth Violence Task Force and traveled to Washington, D.C. with the two essay winners for a conference on teen violence.
After the murder of my won, I started writing poetry as an outlet for my grief and have since become a published author of three novels and am currently writing a fourth one. Writing has become a diversion for my grief. I just finished writing a book about the history of the Cordata Neighborhood Association as narrated by Co-Founder Julianna Royal Guy. The book will be published by local publisher Village Books in Fairhaven. I donated my time and efforts at no charge to the Cordata Neighborhood Association. I also serve on that organization's Board of Directors.
